AI search engines like ChatGPT search, Perplexity, and Gemini are growing fast, but they haven’t replaced Google Search in 2026. Google still held 90.04% of global search share in April 2026. The bigger story is Google turning itself into an AI search engine.
So the honest answer is probably not this year. Here’s the data, and why I think that holds.
What is AI search?
AI search answers your question in a written response instead of 10 blue links. A language model reads sources, pulls the facts together, and (usually) cites where it got them.
ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google’s own AI Mode all work this way. You ask a long, messy question. You get one tidy answer and a follow-up box.
AI search engine vs traditional search
| Final table headings | Traditional Google Search | AI search engines |
|---|---|---|
| What you get | A ranked list of links | A written answer with citations |
| Best for | Navigation, local, shopping, news | Research, comparisons, summaries |
| Follow-ups | Start a new search | Keep chatting in the same thread |
| Weak spot | You do the reading | Confident wrong answers |
| Ads | Above and between results | Still being worked out |
Neither is better at everything. They’re good at different jobs.
How big is AI search compared to Google in 2026?
Small, by market share. Big, by growth.
Bing held 5.13% in April 2026, per StatCounter, and Google held 90.04%. There’s no room in that chart for ChatGPT or Perplexity to claim a slice, because StatCounter measures them differently.
The AI referral numbers tell a different story. In March 2026, ChatGPT drove 78.16% of AI chatbot referrals to websites, Gemini 8.65%, and Perplexity 7.07%. Gemini passed Perplexity for second place that month.
One catch: referrals count clicks. AI answers often end without one, so I’d guess these numbers undercount how much people use AI search.
And Google isn’t shrinking. Search revenue hit $60.4 billion in Q1 2026, up 19%, and Sundar Pichai said queries were at an all-time high. In the next quarter, Search brought in $63.27 billion, up 16.7%.
People aren’t leaving Google for AI. They’re using both, and Google is growing anyway. This shift also raises questions about whether AI is the biggest threat to SEO and how bloggers can adapt to changing search habits.
What is Google AI Overview?
Google AI Overview is an AI-written summary at the top of some search results, with links to the sources underneath. AI Mode is a separate tab where you can ask longer questions and keep the conversation going.
Google’s own numbers are huge. AI Overviews reaches more than 2.5 billion people a month, and AI Mode has more than 1 billion monthly active users. Google has also merged the two into one Search experience.
That’s the answer to the replacement question. The AI search engine most people use is probably Google.
How is AI changing Google Search?
Four changes stand out:
1. Answers come first. The summary sits above the links, so plenty of simple questions end right there.
2. Queries get longer. People type full sentences and expect full answers, because that’s what AI Mode trained them to do.
3. Voice and images count. Nearly 1 in 6 AI Mode queries is voice or image based.
4.Ads move into the answer. Google has been testing ads below AI responses and a shopping feature called Direct Offers.
Then there’s the click question. Google’s line is that AI Overviews cut low-value clicks, not useful ones. But Google hasn’t shared click-through rates for AI Overviews or AI Mode. I’d take that claim with some salt until it does.
Where AI search beats Google, and where Google wins
AI search wins on research. Ask “which laptop under Rs 70,000 is best for video editing, and why” and you get a comparison in 20 seconds. On Google you’d open 6 tabs.
Google wins on everything else. Typing “IRCTC” to reach a site. Finding a chemist open near you. Checking last night’s cricket score. Pulling up a map. When you want to see the original page, links still beat a summary.
Most people I know already switch between the two without thinking about it.
What is the future of Google Search?
Here’s my bet for the next 12 months:
1. Google stays on top through 2026. A 90% lead doesn’t vanish in a year.
2. Search becomes one box with two modes. Quick links when you want them, chat when you don’t.
3. Ads move inside the answers. That’s where the attention is, so that’s where the money goes.
4. ChatGPT and Gemini fight for second place. Perplexity stays a favourite of power users.
5. Simple informational pages lose clicks. A page that only answers “what is X” is the easiest thing for an AI summary to replace.
I could be wrong on timing. The direction looks clear.
What this means for bloggers and SEO
If you publish online, write to be quoted. AI Overviews and chatbots pull from pages that state the answer fast.
1. Put a 40 to 60 word answer right under each question heading.
2. Add specific numbers, names, and dates. Vague pages don’t get cited.
3. Use FAQ sections and clean tables.
4. Publish something only you have: your own data, tests, or opinions.

Frequently asked questions
Can AI search engines replace Google Search?
Not in 2026. Google holds about 90% of global search share, and its Search revenue and query volume keep growing. AI search engines are gaining ground, mostly on research-style questions.
What is the difference between AI search and traditional search?
Traditional search gives you a ranked list of links to read yourself. AI search gives you a written answer with citations and lets you ask follow-ups in the same thread.
Is ChatGPT a Google killer?
No evidence of that yet. ChatGPT drives most AI chatbot referrals to websites, but Google’s market share and revenue are still rising.
What is Google AI Overview?
It’s an AI-generated summary at the top of some Google results, with links to the sources. Google has since merged AI Overviews and AI Mode into one Search experience.
How is AI changing Google Search?
Answers appear at the top, queries are longer and more conversational, voice and image searches are growing, and Google is testing ads inside AI responses.
What is the future of Google Search?
Probably a single search box that blends links and chat answers, with ads inside the answers, and fewer clicks to simple informational pages.
